Goodyear Dunlop Tires Germany has released a statement regarding the planned closure of its tyre factory in Philippsburg, northwest of Stuttgart. The closure will occur as part of the tyre maker’s efforts to reduce overcapacity for low-margin products. A timetable for winding-down production in Philippsburg has not yet been made public, and the plant’s closure will follow negotiations with employee unions. Some 890 jobs are expected to be lost.

The NTDA reports that it remains “firmly committed to its 3mm Tread Safety campaign, an initiative designed to raise awareness among motorists of the importance of changing tyres when they reach a 3mm tread depth rather than the lower, legal limit of 1.6mm, which was launched in partnership with Roadsafe in 2005.” The NTDA statement follows comments made by well-known manufacturer Michelin at the end of September in opposition to 3mm tread depth tyre change philosophies.

On 21 October Horiba Mira played host to the UK’s first collaborative trials of connected and autonomous vehicles. The £20 million research and development project, known as UK Autodrive, brought together Jaguar Land Rover, Ford and Tata Motors European Technical Centre (TMETC) to jointly demonstrate a number of future vehicle technologies at Horiba Mira’s Proving Ground in Nuneaton.
