Gasket, cylinder-head cover
Cracking due to over-compression. Cylinder-head cover gaskets often give rise to complaints. Analysis of the concrete cases encountered clearly reveals: The problem is not caused by the gasket itself but rather by other factors.
Damage pattern:
Possible causes:
- Excessive torque applied on tightening cylinder-head cover
- Failure to comply with manufacturer's bolt tightening method
- Distortion of cylinder-head cover
- Defective isolation elements
- Damage to fastening elements
Consequences:
The high-grade elastomer or soft material of which the gasket is made cannot withstand the force applied and thus cracks.
Action to be taken:
Heed the general fitting instructions of the engine manufacturers. Check the isolation and fastening elements as well as the cylinder head cover.
