Smokey Mountain Blues

Smokey Mountain Blues

A small number of owners of 2011-2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles equipped with the 5.7L engine built on or before Oct. 1, 2013, may experience blue smoke from the exhaust pipe when the engine is initially started after an extended cold soak and the vehicle has been parked facing uphill on a significant incline.

This condition is typically the result of oil pull-over on the rear cylinder walls. The revised oil pan incorporates an improved windage tray/oil scraper that helps to reduce this condition. An associated PCM software update incorporates a reduced engine vacuum feature that is enabled under these conditions which lessens the effect of oil pull-over. The wiTECH software level must be at release 14.01 or higher.

Use a scan tool (wiTECH) and verify that all engine systems are functioning as designed. If DTCs are present, record and repair as needed before reflashing.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Replace the engine oil pan with revised P/N 68207352AA. If the vehicle is model year 2011, the repair is complete. If not a 2011 model, you must reprogram the PCM.

2. Install a battery charger and do not allow battery voltage to drop below 13.2 volts or above 13.5 volts. Reprogram the PCM with software 14.01 or later.

3. After reprogramming, clear any DTCs that may have set in other modules due to reprogramming.
