Alcoa unveils new lighter-weight wheel

Alcoa Inc. unveiled a wheel with a new, lighter-weight aluminum alloy that was designed at the company's New Kensington research center.

Alcoa (NYSE: AA) made the announcement about the MagnaForce alloy over the weekend at the American Trucking Association Management Conference & Exhibition. It said the forged aluminum is 16.5 percent stronger than its Alcoa 6061 alloy and will be used for commercial transportation.

"Our MagnaForce alloy today opens the door to production of the strongest, lightest wheels to increase fuel payload, improve fuel efficiency and enhance sustainability," said Alcoa Wheel and Transportation Products President Tim Myers in a prepared statement.

The wheel will be available in 2014.
